Operation Happy Holidays – Friday December 12 Wed, 17 Dec 2014 17:28:50 +0000 DSC04008 for webFor the fourth year in a row, the 1st Brigade Combat Team – 4th Infantry Division marched on the Marian House. The team carried backpacks full of cold weather clothes and accessories, non-perishable food, toys for children and many more necessities for local community members in need.

At 7 a.m. on Friday, December 12, the soldiers marched from Dochester Park arriving at the Marian House at 7: 30 a.m. to unload their donations. Over 1,200 soldiers from Fort Carson volunteered to march. It is estimated that over 1,000 community members were able to benefit from this donation. Thanks to the generosity and kind hearts of these soldiers, many of our neighbors in need will be able to enjoy a safe, warm, and cheerful holiday season. We also  extend our thanks to the Colorado Springs Police Department for allowing the soldiers to march downtown and providing necessary security. Thank you soldiers for your good works to our community and your service to our country.

Marian House Fire Contained Sat, 13 Dec 2014 19:47:54 +0000 marian hous fire

The Marian House experienced a small fire early this morning, December 13, 2014. The Marian House fire alarms were activated by smoke sometime around 12:00 am. The Fire Department was immediately on scene and traced the fire to the dryer in the basement. The fire was completely contained to the dryer unit, however there was smoke throughout the facility, including the Hanifen Center. Marian House personnel arrived shortly after the fire department and were on site all night.

The Colorado Springs Health Department inspected the Marian House this morning and has cleared the facility for service. Sunday breakfast served at the Marian House will continue as normal. Serving hours are 8:45 am – 10:00 am. Today’s meal was a simple sack lunch distributed to guests as they arrived, along with packages of snacks and cookies. We are grateful to our volunteers for helping prepare the sack lunch as this continues our legacy of non-disruption of meal service at the Marian House.

Marian House volunteers have thoroughly cleaned the Soup Kitchen to ensure there is no smoke residue in any of the prep, serving, and dining areas of the facility. It is unclear at this time if the material and clothing items for the Marian House Adult Clothing Closet and Marian House Children’s Clothing closet, which are stored in the basement, will be salvageable due to smoke damage. This will be determined in the next few days.

The Marian House will need to replace the commercial dryer unit and possibly the washer unit. In the meantime, an alternative for temporary washing and drying of aprons, towels, clothing, etc. will be developed.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our donors, volunteers and the community for your support in building the new Marian House.  This could have been a very different scenario had this happened in the old Marian House building.  The smoke sensors, connected directly to the Colorado Springs Fire Department,  worked exactly as they were designed, and the fire department was alerted before more damage could be done.

Thank you CSFD for your quick response, and a special thank you to our volunteers today who helped us provide today’s meal and clean the soup kitchen so it could be back in service tomorrow!

Las Posadas – Tuesday, December 16 Wed, 10 Dec 2014 22:34:45 +0000 LAS POSwebJoin Us! Acompáñanos!

Tuesday, December 16 – Martes, 16 de Diciembre

5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Las Posadas is a traditional Hispanic Advent celebration symbolizing the search of Mary and Joseph for a place for Jesus to be born. Participants act out Mary and Joseph asking for shelter by forming a procession and singing a traditional song at the door that represents the “inn.”

For us at Catholic Charities, we observe this ritual knowing full well that, like the innkeepers, we are often more willing to reject the stranger who is unlike us and whom, in our blindness, we do not recognize. In our celebration of Las Posadas we are affirming our intention to be a welcoming presence to the “stranger” in our midst.

RSVP to Corey Almond by December 9 at 719-866-6510 or

In lieu of admission, a $10 donation per person is encouraged. Donations greater than $10 are welcome. More information will be provided at the event.
