June is National Hunger Awareness Month!

June 1st, 2017       |

Today,  people all over America and the world need help securing food to keep their families fed.  Hunger Awareness Month is about educating our communities that hunger exists throughout the year, not just during the holiday season.  Moreover, the agencies who are on the front lines of distributing either prepared food or bulk food continue to need your help.  The summer presents some special challenges for strapped families who depend on the free and reduced lunch programs at schools to provide breakfast and lunch for their children during the school year.

Over the past few years, the USDA has made these programs available at more locations during the summer, but many families experiencing poverty have problems accessing the program due to transportation issues.  Furthermore, most of these programs make the meals available only to the school-aged child (18 years old and younger), so it is difficult for families to take their child to the facility to get a meal, then fend for themselves.  Click here to find USDA summer meal sites.

Every year, the Marian House Soup Kitchen experiences significant increases in the number of meals served during the summer months.  Most Colorado Springs schools closed on Friday, May 26th for the summer and the following week, the number of meals served to children and families more than doubled.  On Tuesday, May 30th, the Marian House served 835 meals.  While it is normal for the meal count to be in the high 700’s at the end of the month, this was a little alarming, but not totally unexpected.  So while the USDA is opening more locations for summer meals throughout the city for school-aged children, families continue to come to Marian House to eat together during the summer.

It is no surprise that June, the beginning of summer, is National Hunger Awareness Month as poverty and hunger go hand in hand.  You can help.  Consider donating food to Marian House or Sponsor-A-Day during the summer to help Catholic Charities meet the increased need.  For just $1,500, you can cover the cost of providing all the meals served in one day.  For more information on sponsoring a day of meals, click here or call 719-866-6427 or email Terri.

Thank you for your continued support.  You make it possible for us to serve those most in need.
