Poverty Doesn’t Take a Holiday

Catholic Charities Hosts Community Holiday Events

With the hustle & bustle of the upcoming holidays, it’s important to remember families and individuals in our community who struggle with making ends meet.  At Catholic Charities, we celebrate the holidays by hosting several community-wide events that support families who need a little help.

Through a Turkey Team collaboration with Care & Share and Springs Rescue Mission, Catholic Charities will host Stuff the Bird, scheduled for Monday, November 14th from 7am – 5pm.  Just drop off a frozen turkey by driving through the Marian House parking lot at 14 West Bijou Street.  Each year, we receive requests for turkeys from individuals, families, churches, military groups, and food pantries throughout our 10 county service area.  With community support, we have been able to meet the demand.  Grocery chains such as Safeway & Albertsons not only run specials on turkeys in the weeks before Thanksgiving, but through the generosity of their customers purchasing Turkey Bucks, they have helped Marian House support thousands of families with complete turkey dinners.

On Thursday, December 15th, we will welcome thousands of Ft. Carson soldiers from the Stryker Brigade, 1st Combat Team for Stryker Christmas.  Soldiers march to Marian House with their field packs loaded with donations of food, clothing, and gifts to help struggling families have a Merry Christmas.  Last year, almost 3,000 soldiers participated in the march benefiting thousands of community members.  This is particularly heart-warming as Colorado Springs is a temporary home for these soldiers, who contribute so much to our community and nation.  Help us welcome them as they arrive at Marian House between 7:30 – 8:00 am.

Las Posadas Cultural event takes place at Marian House on Friday, December 16th with a re-enactment of Mary & Joseph seeking a place for Jesus to be born.  Rich in culture and festivity, the event features dancers, a Mexican dinner, singing, and lots of fun.  It benefits Catholic Charities’ Family Immigration Services and is a great way to kick off the holiday season.

Marian House will begin hosting Beer Dinners in partnership with Local Relic Brewery to benefit a job training social enterprise.  Tickets for the October 28 and December 2 dinner are available now.  Visit our website for more information.

Your gifts make lasting change possible as we help our clients move from crisis to stability.  You can be part of this transformation by donating, volunteering, and praying.
