Catholic Charities of Central Colorado is proud to announce the beginning of the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program in Colorado Springs. Aimed at parents of 3-year-olds, this program will send instructors into the homes of parents who are looking for a way to prepare their children for school. Home instructors will work with the parents to provide the tools they need to be central players within their child’s education. The curriculum includes over 30 accessible lessons, craft supplies, a structured lessons, and encourages parents to take just 15 minutes a day to prepare their child for the future.
Since schools are expecting developed skills in students at a younger age, the need for parents to begin teaching their children critical skills within their own homes is more evident than ever before. Parents are a child’s first teacher and often, a child’s future success is closely linked to their educational experience. In fact, if a child is not proficient in certain areas (such as literacy or language skills) by third grade, studies have shown their academic growth is negatively impacted.
Skills such as literacy, phonemic awareness, tactile aptitude, and fluency with numbers all begin at home. Parents are also an introduction to social interaction, connection, conversation, and behavioral development.
HIPPY provides a support system and community available to parents looking for more resources and connections. A parent led- group meets monthly to discuss anything from flu season, to dental care, to early literacy. Topics are decided based on group interest and feature a variety of guest speakers.
