Many people find they suffer from the effects of an abortion.  Although some may suffer more immediately after the abortion itself, others may not begin to recognize issues until years – sometimes many years – have passed.  Confidential counseling is provided to anyone who is struggling with the effects of a past abortion.  Due to the sensitive nature of post-abortive counseling, Catholic Charities provides counselors who are fully trained and experienced to counsel people who have experienced the effects of an abortion.  Some of the issues covered include grief, loss, shame, guilt, trauma, and depression.  The purpose of the counseling is to assist individuals in their healing process and help them experience wholeness and forgiveness.

Project Rachel Woman with the words "healing"
Project Rachel Woman with the words, "hope"

It’s normal to grieve a pregnancy loss, including the loss of a child by abortion. It can form a hole in one’s heart, a hole so deep that sometimes it seems nothing can fill the emptiness.

Project Rachel is the name of the Catholic Church’s healing ministry to those who have been involved in abortion. Project Rachel operates as a network of healing composed of specially-trained caregivers.  The Diocese of Colorado Springs team includes a priest, a licensed professional counselor, and volunteers who are post-abortive.  These individuals provide direct care to women, men, and adolescents who have been touched by an abortion loss, enabling them to grieve, receive forgiveness, and find peace.

The Project Rachel name comes from Scripture

In Ramah is heard the sound of moaning,
of bitter weeping!
Rachel mourns her children,
she refuses to be consoled
because her children are no more.
Thus says the LORD:
Cease your cries of mourning,
wipe the tears from your eyes.
The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward…
There is hope for your future.
