Catholic Charities purchased the Hunt Campus from the Legacy Institute in December 2022. Now fundraising begins to raise money to convert the two-story schoolhouse to 24 units of family housing. These apartments will serve families on the verge of homelessness, couch-surfing, living in their cars, in a shelter, or on the street. With Catholic Charities Family Connections already located on the campus, families will receive vital case management and wraparound services, with additional co-located family-focused resources including CPCD Head Start and the Shandy Clinic. This project has been approved for the Homeless Contribution 25% State Income Tax Credit.

Our vision for the Hunt Family Housing project is to strengthen community and family stability by increasing the inventory of transitional housing units available for low-income and vulnerable families. Achieving safe, stable housing allows families to concentrate on other stabilizing factors such as employment, health, savings, and raising thriving families.

We gathered a panel of experts to discuss the impact of homelessness on children. There was consensus that the experience of being homeless left long-lasting scars on children. The good news is that once a family gets stable housing, those scars can somewhat be reversed by the stability they experience once housed.

It Begins With Families
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Culture of Health brief states the positive impact on health simply due to a family’s surroundings – the Neighborhood Pathway. A home in the middle of an established neighborhood is what families need to thrive. The melding of families in the Hillside neighborhood, with the newly constructed playground and support services on the campus, provide dignity, support, and acceptance these families so desperately need.

* Increase the number of at-risk families accessing life-changing case management services
* Strengthen the overall health (physical, social, and emotional) of children and families
* Increase the number of families achieving long-term housing and stability
We are committed to strengthening the existing Hillside neighborhood while preserving the historic beauty of the Hunt Campus. By renovating the existing, underutilized building into unique apartments, we will guide families to stability with respect, encouragement, and dignity.
By The Numbers in El Paso County
In El Paso county (as of July 2022)
* 92 transitional family housing units exist and are operated by other providers.
* 124 families (241 children/127 adults) are enrolled in Coordinated Entry – the waiting list for housing (VI-SPDAT).
* The 2022 “Point in Time Count” (PIT) identified 152 households with children as being homeless – a 21% increase over the 2020 PIT.
* Of the adults & children identified as homeless, 60% are persons of color.
